The substance binds to ergosterol, a building block in cell walls of yeasts and moulds, which damages the cell wall leading to death.
Substance source
Occurs as a secondary metabolite of the soil actinomycetes Streptomyces natalensis and Streptomyces chattanogggenis. First identified in a a soil sample from South Africa.
