Benchmarking is the process of comparing the performance metrics (e.g. cost, yield, resource use, environmental performance) of a business processes to another that is widely considered to be an industry standard benchmark or best practice. It can also be used to provide a comparison with other businesses in the same sector performing the same activities. It provides a snapshot of performance and helps develop an understanding where a business is in relation to a given standard. This provides a driver for change, and helps advance the performance of both individual businesses and the industry as a whole. Benchmarking may be a one-off event, but often forms part of a continuous cycle of improvement.

AERU’s core skills have been used extensively in recent years both in the definition of current agri-environmental best practice, and to allow agricultural and horticultural businesses get a handle on their agri-environmental (and other) performance. Whilst our links with industry partners also give us access to the latest state-of-the-art online benchmarking software, as used by major UK businesses ands governmental organisations. For examples of our work in this area see our case studies page.
