SUMMARY |
Dicamba is a selective, systemic herbicide used for general weed control. It is highly soluble in water, volatile and has a low potential to leach to groundwater based on its chemical properties. It is not persistent in soil but, under certain conditions, it may persist in aquatic systems. It is moderately toxic to mammals but has a low potential to bioaccumulate. It is an irritant. it is moderately toxic to birds, most aquatic species, honeybees and earthworms. |

Dicamba demonstrates positional isomerism, which refers to the arrangement of substituent groups on the benzene ring. The specific positions of the chlorine atoms at the 3 and 6 locations and the methoxy group at position 2 define dicamba’s herbicidal activity. Altering these positions results in different compounds with distinct chemical and biological properties (e.g. 3,5-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid), but such isomers are not commercially used or referred to as dicamba. | |

The production of dicamba involves a multi-step chemical synthesis starting with 2,5-dichlorophenol, which is first converted into sodium 2,5-dichlorophenolate using a base like sodium methoxide or sodium ethoxide in an alcohol solvent. This intermediate then undergoes a carboxylation reaction under supercritical conditions with carbon dioxide to form 3,6-dichlorosalicylic acid. Finally, an O-methylation reaction is performed using dimethyl carbonate to produce 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid, the active dicamba compound. | |||

Data for the amount of life cycle GHGs produced by dicamba are not available in the public domain. However, whilst estimates vary, more general data suggests that between 18 and 27 kilograms of CO₂e is emitted per kilogram of herbicide produced. |
