A Fairtrade University

The idea of Fairtrade Universities evolved from the certification of Fairtrade Towns in 2000. Today it is possible for Schools, Universities and Churches as well as towns to achieve Fairtrade status. Any University can apply for Fairtrade certification through the Fairtrade Foundation. It involves satisfying a number of criteria that form the basis of our Fairtrade Policy.

The University of Hertfordshire became a Fairtrade University in March 2005.

Why Fairtrade?

International free trade means that many crops grown in the developing world are subject to massive price fluctuations. Because of this producers receive an unreliable price that may not even cover production costs. Many farmers are struggling to survive and cannot afford basic necessities such as food, healthcare and education. Fairtrade is different because it guarantees a better deal for producers in the developing world.

Fairtrade ensures:

  • A price that covers producer's costs.
  • A premium for producers to invest in their communities.
  • Long-term and more direct trading relations

Fairtrade Fortnight takes place at UH every year and is the biggest event in the Fairtrade calendar.
