Recycling at UH

During the last academic year, the University produced more than 1,000 tonnes of waste (excluding waste from the de Havilland Residences), of which 32% was recycled.

In 2002/03 we recycled 5% of waste, in 2003/04 we recycled 20%.

The University has a Waste and Resource Management Strategy which sets a target to recycle 90% of our waste by 2013 and to reduce total waste arising by 50%. At present (February 2009) we are recycling more than 60% of our waste.

Did you know?

For every 1% of waste recycled, this saves the equivalent in weight of an African Elephant in waste being sent to landfill. It also saves UH £2,000.

Why Recycle?

Recycling stops waste going to landfill. This helps to conserve valuable resources by making waste into new items. Landfill sites also produce greenhouse gasses that cause climate change.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways you can help the environment.

Recycling saves the university money. Money saved can be spent on other things such as new staff and better student facilities.

Some items are reused by charities and money raised from some items is donated to local groups.

The more we recycle the more economically viable it will be.
