The University has a waste management strategy, which is based on the waste hierachy; as a priority waste should be
prevented and minimised, where waste is generated, the University's priority is to ensure it is diverted from landfill
and recycled or recovered.
Through the University's staff and student networks, targeting of new facilities and raising awareness, recycling has increased from 5% in 2002/03 to 65% in 2008/09. There are recycling facilities across the University in offices and teaching, refectory and catering, halls of residence, Students Union and communal areas and walkways.
