First iolated from the catnip plant (Nepeta cataria) but also found in the wood of honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica). Nepetalactones are also produced by many aphids, in which they are sex pheromones. |

Nepetalactone is produced commercially using various methods, primarily focusing on microbial biosynthesis and plant extraction. The microbial biosynthesis method involves engineering yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to produce nepetalactone. This process includes introducing specific genes into the yeast to enable the production of nepetalactone from simple sugars. Alternatively, nepetalactone can be extracted from catmint (Nepeta cataria). However, this method is less favoured for large-scale production due to the low yield and high cost associated with plant cultivation and extraction. |
