|  | The first stage of the production of Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus  involves insect cells, such as those from the Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cell line, infected with the virus. Inside the infected cells, the virus replicates its DNA and assembles new virions. This involves the formation of nucleocapsids in the nucleus of the cell. The newly formed virions are then embedded into proteinaceous occlusion bodies (OBs) within the nucleus. These OBs protect the virions and facilitate their spread to other cells. After sufficient replication and occlusion body formation, the infected cells are harvested. The occlusion bodies are then purified from the cell debris. |

The insect rearing (feed, energy) process typically emits 1.0–2.5 kg CO₂e per kg product; Virus inoculation and harvesting emits approximately 0.5–1.5 kg CO₂e. Purification and formulation adds a further 1.0–2.0 kg CO₂e. Therefore the total production process is expected to emit approximately 2.5–6.0 kg CO₂e per kg virus-formulated product. |
