The production process of limestone begins with extraction from quarries, where large deposits of sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate are drilled, blasted, and crushed. The raw limestone is then sorted by size and may undergo further crushing and screening to meet specific industrial or construction requirements. For applications like cement, lime, or chemical production, the limestone is often calcined—heated in kilns to temperatures around 900–1000°C—to drive off carbon dioxide and produce quicklime (CaO). Depending on its end use, the processed limestone may be ground into fine powder, pelletized, or blended with other materials before packaging and distribution.. |

GHG emissions for limestone production have been estimated at around 1.1 to 1.2 tonnes CO₂e per tonne of lime. Approximately 0.8 tonnes of CO₂e is due to direct emissions from calcination. Packaging, transport and use will add to the CO₂e released. |
