The following alerts are based on the data in the tables below. An absence of an alert does not imply the substance has no implications for human health, biodiversity or the environment but just that we do not have the data to form a judgement.

Natural |
A 'ripening hormone' that plays a regulatory role in many processes of plant growth, development and eventually death. |
Ethylene is ubiquitous is the environment being released by both natural (e.g. vegetation, micro-organisms) and man-made sources (e.g. fuel combustion) |
Ethylene is produced commercially through a process called steam cracking. The primary feedstocks are naphtha and natural gas. The feedstock is pre-heated and mixed with steam, then heated to high temperatures in a furnace to break down the hydrocarbons into smaller molecules, including ethylene. The cooled gases, released from the furnace, are compressed to separate the different components. This involves multiple stages of compression and cooling. The compressed gases are sent to a series of distillation columns to separate ethylene from other byproducts like methane, hydrogen, and heavier hydrocarbons. The ethylene is then purified. |

As this parameter is not normally measured directly, a surrogate measure is used: ‘Photochemical oxidative DT₅₀’. Where data is available, this can be found in the Fate Indices section below. |
