The fungus employs a two-pronged attack. Firstly, it infects the stems of germinating seedlings in spring, often leading to plant death and, secondly, it infects leaves, causing brown pustules that reduce the plant’s competitiveness by limiting photosynthesis and growth. |

- Not produced commercially but developed and released under UK government-regulated biological control programs. The fungus is introduced into the field through carefully managed inoculation.

The fungus is applied by spraying spores mixed with water onto the undersides of leaves during the growing season (June–August). Multiple applications maximize infection rates. |

The rust fungus is first cultured in quarantine facilities, where spores are harvested and prepared as a water-based suspension. |
|
Information on the GHG emissions from the cultivation of the fungus have not been published. However, for context, small-scale microbial culture in labs typically emits less than 1 kg CO₂e per batch, depending on duration and equipment. |
