(Also known as: Processionary Moth Carcelia; OPM parasitoid; OPM parasitic fly) |
The following Pesticide Hazard Tricolour (PHT) alerts are based on the data in the tables below. An absence of an alert does not imply the substance has no implications for human health, biodiversity or the environment but just that we do not have the data to form a judgement. The alerts for Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) are based on applying the FAO/WHO (Type 1) and the PAN (Type II) criteria to PPDB data. Further details on the HHP indicators are given in the tables below. Neither the PHT nor the HHP hazard alerts take account of usage patterns or exposure, thus they do not represent risk.

A bristly robust fly with a grey black body covered in dense hairs, giving it a slightly metallic sheen. It has large reddish compound eyes, short antennae, and a stout thorax typical of tachinids. The abdomen is banded or mottled with darker and lighter grey segments, and the wings are clear with fine veins and an iridescent sheen when viewed in light. Its overall appearance is that of a compact, hairy parasitic fly adapted for laying eggs on caterpillar hosts. |

Parasitism. Females lay eggs on or near caterpillars, and the emerging larvae penetrate and develop inside the host, eventually killing it. |
This species is distributed across parts of Europe and Asia, inhabiting woodland and agricultural ecosystems where its hosts occur |

Carcelia iliaca is not commercially produced for use as a biocontrol agent. Forestry and conservation groups mainly focus on protecting these wild, self-introduced populations rather than sourcing them commercially. Small populations may be held by researchers and specialised laboratories for oak tree protection where natural populations ae not abundant. |
The use of Carcelia iliaca as a conservation biocontrol agent has an overwhelmingly positive impact on carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emission profiles. Because it is not mass-produced in industrial, energy-intensive facilities, its usage bypasses the upstream manufacturing emissions typical of other agricultural products. Instead, its implications for greenhouse gases are tied directly to how it alters woodland management, forest ecology, and chemical dependencies. |

As this parameter is not normally measured directly, a surrogate measure is used: ‘Photochemical oxidative DT₅₀’. Where data is available, this can be found in the Fate Indices section below. |
