Encarsia citrina is a minute yellow parasitoid wasp, typically less than 1 mm long, with a glossy black abdomen contrasting its bright yellow head and thorax. It has large, dark compound eyes and short, clubbed antennae. The wings are transparent and iridescent, held flat over the body, showing fine venation. Its legs are pale yellow and slender, giving it a delicate appearance. |

The commercial production of Encarsia citrina relies on a specialised three-tiered living system because, as an obligate endoparasitoid, it cannot be cultivated on artificial media. Commercial insectaries mass-rear these wasps by first cultivating host plants, typically pumpkins, butternut squash, or potted citrus seedlings. These plants are then intentionally infested with an armoured scale insect host, such as the oleander scale (Aspidiotus nerii) or the citrus snow scale (Unaspis citri). Once the scale insects reach their optimal intermediate nymphal stages, adult Encarsia citrina females are introduced into the climate-controlled rearing chambers. The female wasps pierce the scale shells to inject a single egg into each nymph. Population growth is highly efficient. Finally, the production cycle concludes when the parasitised, darkened scale mummies are harvested or the freshly emerged adult wasps are collected and packed into small, aerated jars containing a baseline sugar source for transit. |
