AERU is comprised of a small team of researchers that collectively assure an integrated whole farm approach to its research covering:
  • Energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change mitigation.
  • Sustainable resource use (water, manures, other inputs, waste).
  • Pesticide science (fate, transport and ecotoxicology).
  • Nutrient use, budgeting and environmental losses (nitrate, phosphate, nitrous oxide, ammonia).
  • Agricultural best practice.
  • Policy implementation and assessment.

The research unit has considerable experience in agricultural practices, policy and regulation, agri-environmental impact assessment and indicator development, agricultural sustainability and farm software development (including on- and off-line applications and initiatives) with particular emphasis on providing novel solutions to problems of data interpretation, harmonization, presentation and issues of knowledge and information transfer.

The University of Hertfordshire was the main project contractor and were fully responsible for the delivery, quality and management of the project. It was also responsible for the desk-based research and all model development activities including the 'theoretical case studies'.
