(Also known as: ethanimidamide; NI-25) |
SUMMARY |
Acetamiprid is an insecticide that is used to control sucking and chewing pests. It is highly soluble in water and is volatile. Based on its chemical properties it would not be expected to leach to groundwater. It is not persistence in soil systems but may be very persistent in aquatic systems under certain conditions. It has a moderate mammalian toxicity and it has a high potential for bioaccumulation. Acetamiprid is a recognised irritant. It is highly toxic to birds and earthworms and moderately toxic to most aquatic organisms. |
Hazard alerts |
The following alerts are based on the data in the tables below. An absence of an alert does not imply the substance has no implications for human health, biodiversity or the environment but just that we do not have the data to form a judgement. These hazard alerts do not take account of usage patterns or exposure, thus do not represent risk.

Chemical structure |
|
Acetamiprid exhibits geometrical isomerism due to the presence of a cyanoimino group that can adopt E and Z configurations. Among these, the E-isomer is more stable and considered the biologically active form. Additionally, acetamiprid has several conformers resulting from rotation around single bonds, especially in the N-pyridylmethylamino group.

|
Acetamiprid is produced commercially through a multi-step chemical synthesis that combines a chlorinated pyridine derivative with a cyanoamidine group. The process typically begins with the preparation of 6-chloro-3-pyridylmethylamine, which is derived from chloropyridine via chlorination and alkylation. This intermediate is then reacted with a cyano-containing compound such as cyanoguanidine or cyanoacetic acid derivatives to form the cyanoamidine moiety. The final step involves coupling these two components under controlled conditions, often using acid catalysts or dehydrating agents, followed by purification through crystallization or solvent extraction.
|
There is no publicly reported data for the exact GHG emissions associated with the commercial production of acetamiprid, but based on life cycle assessments of similar synthetic pesticides, the production of acetamiprid likely generates between 20–40 kg CO₂e per kg of active ingredient. |
