Bicyclopyrone is a broad-spectrum herbicide. It is highly soluble in water and non-volatile. It can be persistent in both soil and aquatic systems. It is moderately toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates and aquatic plants but presents a low risk to honeybees. Its oral mammalian toxicity is low but there are some concerns that it may be a reproduction/developmental toxin.
Hazard alerts
The following alerts are based on the data in the tables below. An absence of an alert does not imply the substance has no implications for human health, biodiversity or the environment but just that we do not have the data to form a judgement. These hazard alerts do not take account of usage patterns or exposure, thus do not represent risk.
Human health High alert: Mammals chronic toxicity: High; Reproduction/development effects

Chemical structure
Isomerism
Bicyclopyrone exhibits isomerism that arises from a chiral centre within the molecule, where four different substituents are bonded to a single carbon atom, resulting in non-superimposable mirror images (R and S configurations). Additionally, during metabolic processes in plants and animals, bicyclopyrone can form desmethyl monohydroxy isomers, which are structural isomers differing by the loss of a methyl group and the addition of a hydroxyl group at different positions on the molecule. Bicyclopyrone is usually is marketed and used as a racemic mixture.
As this parameter is not normally measured directly, a surrogate measure is used: ‘Photochemical oxidative DT₅₀’. Where data is available, this can be found in the Fate Indices section below.
