Azospirillum species are well known for their nitrogen fixing activities and values as biostimulants. In a study with citrus (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) Azospirillum lipoferum was applied as a foliar spray to investigate its effect on fruit set, dropping, yield and fruit quality. The obtained results revealed that, fruit set and drop percentages, yield and fruit quality were all significantly improved by A. lipoferum treatments. Used in comjunction with Furdose (an activator of the beneficial soil microorganisms) further improvements were observed. It increased fruit set, yield and fruit quality in terms of fruit number, fruit kg/tree, fruit firmness, soluble solids content, reducing and total sugars and vitamin C. |

Azospirillum lipoferum is first isolated from the rhizosphere soils and root of various crops (e.g. cotton, maize, sorghum, and chili). The roots are surface sterilized and then placed in a nitrogen-free malate agar medium in a fermenter under controlled conditions to encourage the growth of the bacteria. The cultivated bacteria are then formulated into either powder or liquid biofertilizers by mixing the culture with a carriers to create a stable product. |
