|
The production of simethicone involves a carefully controlled process that combines polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with micronised silica to create a stable, effective antifoaming agent. First, silica particles are finely ground using an airslide disintegrating mill until they reach the desired particle size, ensuring optimal dispersion. Next, dimethicone is heated in a stainless steel kettle to temperatures above 140C, and the micronised silica is gradually added in a mass ratio of approximately 17:1 (dimethicone to silica). The mixture is stirred continuously, allowing the silica to be uniformly suspended within the silicone matrix. | |||
|
While no precise figure is published for simethicone, similar silicone-based pharmaceutical compounds have estimated emissions in the range of 1–3 kg CO₂e per kg of product, depending on energy sources and production scale. |
