Alpha-terpinene exhibits structural isomerism, specifically positional isomerism, within the family of terpinene isomers, namely gamma-terpinene, beta-terpinene, and delta-terpinene which all differs in the position of the carbon–carbon double bonds within the cyclohexadiene ring. In alpha-terpinene, the double bonds are located at the 1,3-positions, forming a 1,3-cyclohexadiene system, whereas in gamma-terpinene, for example, they occupy the 1,4-positions.

Tea tree oil is usually supplied as an emulsifable concentrate that is diluted and used as a foliar spray
Alpha-terpinene is produced commercially via extraction from natural sources and chemical synthesis. Steam Distillation is the most common method used to extract alpha-terpinene from essential oils like tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia). The plant material is subjected to steam, which vaporises the alpha-terpinene. The vapour is then condensed and collected. Alternatively, alpha-terpinene can be produced by metabolically engineered microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and by a fermentation process.
