(Also known as: diatomaceous earth; amorphous silicon dioxide; silica; diatomite; kieselguhr; siliceous earth; amorphous silica; DE) |
A naturally occurring substance that is used in veterinary medicine for its anthelmintic and disinfectant properties | |
|---|---|---|
Used as a neutral anthelmintic however, there is limited evidence of its efficiacy. Also used as a bedding/litter additive for its moisture absorbancy and disinfectant properties. | |

Kieselgur is produced from the fossilised remains of microscopic algae called diatoms that accumulated in ancient lake and sea beds. Commercial extraction begins with open-pit mining of sedimentary deposits, followed by selective removal to preserve the integrity of the material. The raw kieselgur is then dried to reduce moisture content below 6%, crushed, and milled to achieve the desired particle size. | |||
There are no specific GHG emission data available for Kieselgur, however, based on the expected production steps, Kieselgur is probably in the low-emission category compared to synthetic pesticides or pharmaceuticals. Data suggests it falls into the 0.25–0.65 kg CO₂e/kg product rage. This includes the mining, transport, processes, drying, packaging & distribution. |
