Studies have shown that kinetin can significantly improve growth parameters, including seedling and root lengths, fresh and dry weights, and antioxidant activities. For example, applying 30 mg/L of kinetin has been found to enhance growth, floral, and root traits under prolonged irrigation intervals. In a study with almonds the addition of kinetin resulted in statistically significant yield improvements. Almond nut set and retention levels also improved. |

Kinetin promotes cell division (cytokinesis) by stimulating the production of proteins necessary for mitosis. It also influences the growth of shoots and roots by interacting with other hormones like auxins. Kinetin helps delay the aging process in leaves by maintaining chlorophyll content and protein synthesis, thereby prolonging the functional life of the leaves. |
Kinetin was originally isolated from autoclaved herring sperm DNA. It has been found to occur naturally in various sources, including: plant cell extracts including plant root nodules and the endosperm liquid of fresh, young coconut fruit; freshly extracted DNA from human cells and in human urine. |
Kinetin is commercially produced through a synthetic process that begins with adenine, a naturally occurring compound found in DNA. Adenine undergoes a chemical reaction with furfural, an aldehyde derived from agricultural byproducts like corncobs or oat hulls. This reaction forms N6-furfuryladenine, which is kinetin. The resulting kinetin is then purified to remove any impurities. |
