How to calculate the Aggregated Total Applied Toxicity (ATAT)

The ATAT is calculated using pesticide usage data coupled with pesticide properties data, specifically ecotoxicity endpoint values (e.g., LC₅₀, EC₅₀, NOEC, etc.) in the form of Regulatory Threshold Levels (RTLs) for pesticide active ingredients for the following species groups: aquatic invertebrates, aquatic plants, fish, terrestrial arthropods (excluding pollinators), pollinators, birds, mammals, soil organisms and terrestrial plants.

The TAT for each species group is calculated by (i) dividing the total mass of a pesticide active ingredient (applied within a year) by the RTL (toxicity) of that pesticide active ingredient for that species group; and (ii) summing the output from (i) for all active ingredients applied.

The ATAT value for a country and year is calculated by (i) expressing each species group TAT relative to the baseline period (the mean TAT during 2011-20); and (ii) calculating the mean TAT across the nine species groups, with TAT indexes of less than 50% being capped at 50%. This ensures that the overall ATAT can only reach 50% (the target) if all species group TATs are 50% or lower.
