Alpha-pinene was discovered in the 19th century as a major component of turpentine oil, which is derived from the resin of pine trees. It is also a component of other essential oils including tea-tree. |
|
Alpha-pinene is typically produced commercially through the extraction of turpentine oil from pine trees through a process called tapping, where the tree's resin is collected. This resin is then distilled to separate the turpentine oil. The turpentine oil is subjected to fractional distillation to separate its components. Alpha-pinene is one of the major components of turpentine oil. It can also be produced from essential oils like tea tree oil ( Melaleuca alternifolia) but, generally, these oils only contain small amounts of alpha-pinene. |
