The biostimulants produced from Ecklonia maxim contain various natural plant growth regulators (auxins, cytokinins, polyamines, gibberellins, abscisic acid, and brassinosteroids) that play a role in plant growth stimulation. Shoot and root elongation have been observed with maize. An auxin-like activity has also been observed in studies with mung bean. Growth, yield and quality all improved in lettuce cropping along with positive changes in morphological and physiological traits such as increased biomass, improved water and nitrogen use efficiency. The extract enhances quality attributes of produce, including fruit firmness, sugar content, colour, and longer shelf life. The extract has also been shown to be effective at mitigating stress caused by drought or poor nutrient availability in various plants including cucumber, tomato, zucchini, chicory, melon, fodder grass. |

Mode of action as a biostimulant is not fully clear. Increased fruit yields may be due to improved pollen germination and pollen tube growth, leading to improved ovule fertilization and fruit set. Brassinosteroids elicit a wide range of physiological responses. They promote cell division and elongation, and influence stem and root growth, floral initiation, flower and fruit development and seed yield. |
