Like many seaweeds, Sargassum muticum is rich in bioactive compounds (e.g. antioxidants, phytohormones, glucosinoids, bioactive compounds, and enzymes) giving it potential as a biostmulant. Lab and field studies have demonstrated that Sargassum extracts will promote plant growth, nutrient uptake, and stress tolerance in crops. For example, a study with tomatoes treated with S. muticum extract showed a 14.9% increase the plant stem diameter in unstressed and 16% in stressful conditions. Research has also shown that different drying techniques and extraction methods can significantly affect the extracts physicochemical properties and so its biostimulant efficacy. |
