Kappaphycus alvarezii is well studied as a biostimulant for its growth enhancing properties. There are several reported studies. One with common beans, Phaseolus vulgaris demonstrated significant higher growth across several parameters including total plant height & length, total biomass and root size. In another study with a K. alvarezii derived biostimulant applied to cucumbers a significant expansion of cucumber cotyledons (~29%) as well as an increase in total leaf area of (19%), was reported. Efficacy has been shown to vary with the extraction process utilised and the product formulation. |

The extract increases amylase activity, suggesting starch to sucrose conversion is used efficiently as an energy source during growth. In one study gene expression analysis showed the expression of genes involved in cell division, cell number, cell expansion and cell size were modulated and the expression of those genes involved in auxin and cytokinin metabolism were differentially regulated. Treated plants efficiently regulated photosynthetic quenching by reducing loss via non-photochemical and non-regulatory quenching. Applications of the extract also modulated changes in the steady-state photosynthetic parameters of the cucumber leaves. A modulation of the electron and proton transport related pathways, which help plants to efficiently utilize the photosynthetic radiation for optimal growth, was noted. Hence bioactive compounds present in in the seaweed improve growth by regulating the physiological as well as developmental pathways. |
