About the Aggregated Total Applied Toxicity (ATAT) |
The ATAT is one of suite of metrics in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) within the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). More specifically it forms part of Headline indicator 7.2 under the GBF, with a target for the ATAT to reach 50% by 2030 (i.e. reduce the overall risk from pesticides by at least half by 2030).
The ATAT combines data on quantities of pesticides used with data on their toxicity to a range of species groups. These include Aquatic invertebrates; Aquatic plants; Fish; Arthropods; Pollinators; Birds; Mammals; Soil organisms; and Terrestrial plants. ATAT calculations for all countries will use the same set of toxicity values in the form of Regulatory Threshold Levels (RTLs). These RTL values are derived by (i) collating acute and chronic ecotoxicity endpoint values (e.g., LC₅₀, EC₅₀, NOEC, etc.) for each pesticide active ingredient for each species within a group; (ii) applying methodologies in established regulatory frameworks, such as safety factors; and (iii) selecting the worst case value (after applying safety factors) as the RTL. The PPDB serves as the common source of data for these RTLs.
The PPDB is being used to support the ATAT. It provides the ecotoxicity endpoint values in the form of RTLs for pesticide active ingredients, which are needed to calculate the ATAT.
