The extract is best known for its antimicrobial properties. For example, citrus greening, disease of citrus caused by a vector-transmitted pathogen, was reduced due to a reduction of the pest Diaphorina citri following treatment with C. sertularioides. There are very few studies published regarding the effectiveness of the tropical/subtropical seaweed Caulerpa sertularioides as a biostimulant. Those that do report positive effects on yield and improved tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress. However, there are studies that report that seaweed extracts made from C. sertularioides applied at higher concentrations (1%) negatively impacted tomato seed germination. |

As an insecticide the extract appears to be a repellent. Like other seaweed-based biostimulants activity is due to the high concentrations of bioactive compounds naturally present, such as carbohydrates and polyphenols which modulate gene expression and induce metabolic changes in plants that lead to the observed biostimulant effects. |
